Would You Intervene In Child Discipline?
Albuquerque airport aviation police say a mother told them she slapped her crying 13-month-old daughter on a flight between Dallas and Albuquerque because the child kicked her. The officer says the mother demonstrated how she hit the girl on the face by lightly slapping the officer's arm with an open hand. A Southwest Airlines flight attendant removed the child from the mother during the flight after she saw the mother slap her and passengers complained. The incident sparked debate about when to intervene in child discipline. No charges were filed and the family was allowed to continue their trip. The flight attendant also says the child had a black eye. Both parents said that came from an earlier dog bite. Would You Intervene In Child Discipline???? Do you think the Flight Attendant has the Right to take your Child From You if you Spank Them? Add Stars!!!!!!

No I mind my own Business

There is quite a bit of different between a spanking and a slap in the face. The child was 13 months old, I would never smack a child in the face and I wouldn't use spanking as a form of discipline at that age.

Both were wrong here. A slap in the face is not an appropriate form of discipline for a 13 month old. However, the flight attendant over stepped their bounds by taking the child away. Would I intervene? Yes, if I thought that there was abuse, I would. In this situation, I don't know, I wasn't there.

An adult who slaps a year old child in the face IS my business. You betcha - I would definitely say something to the mother, and it would not be kind. I spanked both my kids on their safely padded butts (once they were old enough to understand - certainly not that young), and I never hit them in the face. I dont have any authority to remove the child, however......Im sure we will find out if the flight attendant exceeded her authority or not. If the child had a black eye, then I can see why she did (from a dog bite....REALLY?? What responsible parent allows a dog that bites near their toddlers face? (!!)) This mother sounds like a nightmare to me.....I hope there is an investigation into her ability to care for this child when she arrives at her destination.

If the parent were using unreasonable means to try and 'discipline' a child, yes I would intervene. A physical punishment like a spanking is tolerable, I wouldn't say anything about that, but only if it were being done properly. Slapping a child in the face, or head, or anywhere that is not the hand or bottom is inappropriate punishments. Slapping a child with any force beyond what is necessary to gain a child's attention is inappropriate punishment. Physical punishments on any child under the age of 3 is, in addition to being ineffective, inappropriate. That woman was out of line, and the flight attendant did a good thing by intervening.

I would but not in a yelling or trying to tell the mother she was doing something wrong.. I would just sit close and start to get the child attention, and then when the mother saw me, I would say something about my daughter or grandson and go from there.. "oh let me hold her, please" or something alone that line. . yes the flight attendant did the right thing, and i am ashamed at the police for not doing anything..a BABY with a black eye and a mom that openly admitted to smacking that baby.
